Our Weekly Tigrinya Language Program is designed to help children and youth connect with their cultural roots by learning to speak, read, and write Tigrinya in a fun and supportive environment.

Segeneyti Society in Edmonton is more than a community group; it is a living bridge between a cherished hometown and a new home in Canada. Formed by people with roots in Segeneyti and the surrounding areas, the society brings together families, youth, and elders who share a common language, history, and culture. In a city that can often feel busy and individualistic, Segeneyti Society creates a place where newcomers are welcomed, traditions are protected, and support is never far away.
From its earliest days, the community in Edmonton grew out of simple, practical needs: helping each other find housing and work, translating at appointments, gathering for funerals, weddings, and holidays. Over time, these acts of everyday kindness became something stronger and more organized. Today, the Segeneyti Society plays an important role in keeping people connected – organizing cultural celebrations, community meetings, youth activities, and support for those struggling with the challenges of migration and settlement.
The society is also a cultural home. It keeps alive the songs, stories, and values that members grew up with, while encouraging the younger generation – those born or raised in Canada – to understand where they come from. Through language, food, music, and community events, children and youth learn pride in their heritage and respect for their elders. At the same time, the society teaches practical skills for life in Canada: education, responsibility, and working together for the common good.
Segeneyti Society in Edmonton stands at the meeting point of two worlds. It honours the memories and traditions of Segeneyti, while embracing the opportunities and responsibilities of life in Edmonton. In doing so, it offers its members not just a network, but a sense of belonging – a reminder that no one has to walk their journey alone.
